New Releases: |
Begushkin
Nightly Things (Locust)
Begushkin is the masterwork of Brooklyn's swinging sultan,
multi-instrumentalist and masterful songwriter Dan Smith & friends.
Begushkin's debut full length Nightly Things is an 8 track journey into a
creepy & disturbing surreal nightlife full of enemies, coarse love, and
violence delivered with both a manic desperation and deadpanned absurdity
that's augmented by Smith's intricate guitar picking & a woman's mournful
harmonies. Nightly Things takes the time honored American Gothic themes
and recasts them in a witches brew of middle eastern and eastern European
musical influences. The result is a beautifully disorienting trek through
the wilderness of Smith's disturbing mind like some successor to Michael
Hurley's twisted, yet sympathetic Werewolf first introduced some 40 years
ago. |
Nedelle
The Locksmith Cometh (Tangram 7s)
Nedelle¹s fourth album and third solo album "The Locksmith Cometh" revels
in a bizarre mixture of humor and sadness. Topics often approach that
which is seemingly insurmountable - from death and war to breakups and
hopelessness. The music fits this paradoxical feeling too, from the
bouncy, girl-group inspired "Ghost Ships" and "Your Fiancé", to the more
intimate "Ex-Priest" and "The Last Thing I Do". Nedelle played violin,
guitar and keyboards on the album, and had a couple of special guests to
fill out the arrangements Chris Cohen (The Curtains) offered drums,
bass, and some guitar; Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) also played additional
guitar |
I Dub NY
S/T (Psychic Dub Cat)
The I DUB NEW YORK album is a masterpiece of dub fusion, blending elements
of roots reggae, jazz, world music and electronica. The album was
Produced, Arranged and Mixed at Wackies Studio in Queens, NY by Bullwackie
in collaboration with IDNY. |
Michio Kurihara
Sunset Notes (20|20|20)
In 2005, Michio Kurihara released his first solo album, Sunset Notes,
on Japan's respected Pedal Records. It was a long time coming for the
guitarist, whose musicianship has enlightened such groups as Ghost,
Damon & Naomi, White Heaven, The Stars and Yura Yura Teikoku. While
embracing a variety of styles and techniques (a gentle song sung by
Pedal pop star Ai Aso, is followed by a snakelike instrumental psych
workout, which is followed by a Branca-esque distorted tsunami of
guitars, and so on), the album maintains a focus around Kurihara's
ingenius guitar playing. Sunset Notes is a mind-expanding, exciting
album — beautifully arranged, precisely executed, and an absolute
thrill to hear. |
The Field
From Here We Go Sublime (Kompakt)
This is the debut full-length release by Stockholm's own Axel Willner aka
The Field. The blissful, addictive, transformative sounds on "From Here We
Go Sublime" absolutely speak for themselves. Samples abound throughout,
immediately giving you a feeling of warmth and familiarity on the first
listen that you can't quite grasp... like a warm glove on a cold winter's
day. The Field's music literally breathes: harmonious drones mingle with
the dizzying swell and reversed motion of bass drums and euphony. There is
a ceaseless, cyclical signature familiar to all his music, but that's the
most exciting part of The Field -- the beautiful dynamic of beats and
space that exists in endlessness.
|
Jozef Van Wissem
Stations of the Cross (Incunabulum)
Composer-lute player Jozef Van Wissem is renowned for his unusual approach
of the Renaissance lute. He cuts and pastes classical pieces, reverses
melodies, adds electronics. The unusual wedlock of composition and
improvisation creates an unheard amalgam of contemporary folk and late
Renaissance music He has accomplished the strange feat of bridging the
idiom of seventeenth century lute literature and twenty-first century free
improv of the silent type. |
Colleen
Les Ondes Silencieuses (Leaf)
Cécile Schott returns with her third album as Colleen, the highly personal
but distinctly more adventurous and confident Les Ondes Silencieuses, which
follows her one-off Colleen Et Les Boîtes À Musique project from late
2006.This album signals a change of approach for Parisienne Schott. Gone
are the samples and loops of old, as the emphasis moves to the natural tones
produced by a range of unusual live instruments, largely unadorned. |
Apparat
Walls (Shitkatapult)
Walls is the fifth full-length album for Apparat, aka Berlin’s Sascha Ring, who
had one hell of a year 2006. His collaboration with Ellen Allien, the critically-
acclaimed album Orchestra of Bubbles, forged electrifying new connections between
techno, electro and pop music. |
Jakob Olausson
Moonlight Farm (De Stijl)
Moonlight Farm is a record made on a dime, in a dime-sized bedroom
apartment, and it transcends all the limitations that that scenario has
thusly taught us to expect. Comprised of ten songs, somehow both comforting
and unsettling, concerned with the classic subjects: the garbage, the
flowers, one¹s mother, and the love of them all. Laid thick with a vague
dissonance, they possess a mask of fog / haze, but the trail between writer
/ performer / song is not often trodden in such a deftly crystalline manner. |
Fursaxa
Alone In The Dark Wood (Huume)
For something so simple, the music of Philadelphia magician Tara Burke (aka
Fursaxa) is remarkably distinctive. Her bag of tricks isn't exactly
bulging-- she usually uses multi-tracked vocals wrapped in organ drones,
acoustic guitar, and a light dusting of percussion. Yet the tone-hymns she
spins from those basic elements are unmistakably her own.On Alone in the
Dark Wood, the fifth Fursaxa full-length, those atmospheres and environments
dominate. There is less to latch onto in the way of structure or melody;
where on Lepidoptera Burke developed ideas over long arcs, here she opts for
smaller sketches (almost half of the tracks hover in the two-minute range)--
more like haiku than short stories. Yet her curling plumes still entrance,
the musical equivalent of a hypnotist's watch swinging before your eyes. |
Sarolta Zalatnay
S/T (B-Music)
With Sarolta Zalatnay, and recent reissues of Selda and Mustafa Ozkent,
B-Music is making a strong case for Eastern Europe asone of the final frontiers in the
rock reissue game. |
Jana Hunter
There's No Home (Gnomonsong)
Besides being one of the best and most underrated luminaries on the neo-folk
scene, Hunter is the entrepreneur who toured the East Coast last summer by
sailboat. Her meditative, playful, sparse, acoustic-driven songs are
refreshing, somber, and sometimes eerie. She's touring for the
soon-to-be-released- and most excellent!- There's No Home (Gnomonsong),
which finds Jana exploring ever-so-slightly poppier tunes. VILLAGE VOICE
